Inculcate the Right Attitude to Math Learning

Have you ever caught your own child counting rhythmically to himself, or enjoying his ability to count beyond a hundred? Playful math is what some call “pure math”. It is what real mathematicians do, and it is also what 4-year-olds do. It is math done for no other purpose than the sheer fun and beauty of it. From an early age, children are naturally curious about math, and play with math concepts without formal guidance. Such play involves the discovery or production of patterns in numbers.

It is important to harness that sense of adventure and discovery in children, and the joy of realising they can do more with that discovery. For example, when they can count up to ten using their fingers, they naturally enquire “what’s after 10?”. They then count another set of ten, and realise they can count in unlimited sets of ten, all the way to “100”, and even further beyond.

Early math leaning is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Children master concepts in no set sequence, but assemble a complete picture over time. For example, your child may feel good that he can now count up to bigger numbers than previously. It encourages genuine passion and desire for growth in children, an attitude critical to later success in life.

Key Math Concepts

At MJM, we focus on the core building blocks of the Singapore primary school math syllabus, including:

1. Number sense (e.g. an intuitive understanding of numbers, their magnitude, relationships, and how they are affected by operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.)

2. Geometry (e.g. patterns, shapes, tessellations)

3. Measurement (e.g. size, distance, amount)

4. The language of math (e.g. more than, less than, equal to)

Why MJM?

Early Preparation and Foundation for School - By age 3 or 4, a child should have a good grasp of certain math concepts and be able to perform basic math operations. Our program prepares your child early for school, by equipping them with a comprehensive foundation on the concepts above.

We Meet Kids at Their Level - Our committed team of teachers will meet your child at his level of understanding, and identify the concepts and skills your child already possesses. This enables us to build an individualised program of instruction and support for your child, and build up on his ability.

We’re Fun! - We invest heavily in making math fun for your child through games and manipulatives. Math quickly becomes real to children as they use it by talking, reasoning, playing and doing.

We Keep You Looped In - Our teachers closely observe and document your child’s progress, so that you can stay abreast on your child’s competency and challenges.
